What’s a Dog Trainers’ School and What’s Not?
As there is absolutely no official dog trainer, and so is an official dog trainers’ school. In a sense, anyone can call himself a trainer and anyone have the equal chance of running a dog trainers’ school and produce their own “experts”. Remember that this field of dog training is not yet regulated. For the moment, the only organizations that veterinarians and professional trainers recognize are the Association of Dog Trainers and the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors. However, these two organizations have yet to prove their expertise and training procedures and programs. Most “certified trainers” and “master trainers” are only recognized by the schools from where they attended their training classes which brings no substantial rate at all. Despite the fact that there are quite a number of good dog trainers’ school, most are not worth the payments and will not assure that you will become a good dog trainer. Should you decide to attend a dog trainers’ school, avoid the schools who boasts that they will teach you all the aspects of training dogs in one single course. This may seem practical but will in the end, prove worthless and unrealistic. Notably, every one field in dog training is a separate field of expertise. It takes years before one becomes an authority in one area of study. Remember that there are no “secrets” to training dog trainers. Also, be wary of dog trainers’ school claiming to make use of forceful and outdated dog training methods. Go for a dog trainers’ school which employs modern, realistic and humane training techniques. Also, the academy must provide you with a firm foundation of the know-how in understanding dog behaviors and psyche. But above all these, there are certain guidelines which may help aspiring dog trainers who are planning to attend a dog trainers’ school. Primarily, it must be understood that your main work is not solely involved in training dogs, it will include training with people as well for in most parts, and your job is to train the dog’s owner to train his or her own dog. If you are to enroll in a dog trainers’ school, assure yourself that the dog trainers’ school top priorities are to develop your good communication and your skills in dealing with people. The dog trainers’ school must teach you to be flexible as a starting point. And from there you must acquire the ability to accept and see other people’s point of views. In general, people have different perception and attitude towards owning a dog and many have varying level of expectations in a dog’s performance and behavior. The dog trainers’ school you should be attending must coach you in educating people. This is rarely possible as many dog owners already have their point of views but can be achievable. Attending conferences and seminars may help broaden your knowledge in dog training. Any good dog trainer must do so as these may keep them up dated with the latest advances in dog training. On the other hand, watching videos and reading books may lack all the hands-on fundamentals, nonetheless they may give you the basic foundations for learning. A dog trainers’ school must cultivate in you the desire to learn new training methods and techniques as this is essentially the reason why you are attending in their classes. A dog trainers’ school must not only teach you one way of doing things and apply them in all problems.
